Overview of the Course: 

In a rapidly changing world, Sociology offers learners the opportunity not only to explore the processes that are shaping current trends, but also to develop an understanding of the complexity and diversity of human societies and their continuities with the past.

The key concepts that are studied throughout the course are:

• Inequality and opportunity

• Power, control, and resistance

• Social change and development

• Socialisation, culture, and identity

• Structure and human agency

The study of sociology stimulates awareness of contemporary social, cultural and political issues, and focuses on the importance of examining these issues in a rigorous, reasoned and analytical way.

Course Objectives:

Following a Sociology AS & A Level programme helps students develop abilities which universities value highly, including:

• a deep understanding of their subjects

• higher order thinking skills – analysis and critical thinking

• presenting ordered and coherent arguments

• independent learning and research.

Course Content:

Unit 1 - Socialisation, identity, and methods of research

Unit 2 - The Family

Students will have the opportunity to engage with a number of different assessment types such as…

External Assessment:

AS Paper 1 - Socialisation, identity, and methods of research (90 minutes)

AS Paper 2 - The Family (90 minutes)
